I understand insecurities (believe me, do I ever) but this went beyond most otherwise well-adapted, mature adults with a smattering of neuroticism or insecurities, to a full-fledged ‘I’m not sure this person is capable of coping with life on his own’ lack of confidence and quite possibly clinical depression. I was so fed up with Noah’s whiny, poor, unlovable me persona, that I came very close to not being able to finish the book. Unfortunately, the mystery took a back seat to the character development and romance. The story had an interesting mystery and if it had stuck with that plot then the book probably would have been above average. The narrator also doesn’t seem to understand punctuation because there isn’t any pausing at the end of sentences so the book resembled a collection of 15-minute-long run-on sentences.
And he can’t voice women, especially teenagers without them sounding like whiny parodies. Not only does the narrator not do a very good job with multiple voices (they’re all similar enough they’re often indistinguishable), he also has an odd acting formula (overly whispery or overly aggressive plus stunted speech alternating with frantic speaking that I think is supposed to make things seem more intense but actually just sounds obnoxious and over-acted). The written book is probably better than the audio because the mannerisms of the narrator were annoying and ruined a lot of the book for me.
